Biography
Mick Murray has been a Member of Parliament since 2001 and was appointed the Minister for Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering; Sport and Recreation in the McGowan Government in March 2017.
Mr Murray was born in the small town of Duranillin before moving to the coal mining town of Collie as a child, where he later completed his apprenticeship as a mechanic.
He found employment in his trade in the State's North West before working underground and in open cut in Collie's coal mines for 24 years, later representing mine employees as a union delegate.
Mr Murray has represented various parts of the South West region since entering Parliament, with numerous boundary changes giving him responsibility for the shires of Collie, Capel, Dardanup, Donnybrook-Balingup, Harvey, Boyup Brook and Boddington during his time as an MP. Mr Murray also served as a Collie Shire Councillor for 12 years before entering Parliament.
Mr Murray played, coached and held administrative roles in country football, coaching Collie Football Club to a premiership in 1987 and Collie IIs to its first-ever flag in 1983.
As a young man he raced motorbikes at Claremont, Collie and Bunbury, where he insists he was better known for his spectacular crashes than anything else.
Mr Murray is passionate about the role sport can play in fostering positive behaviours and life habits in young people. He believes junior sport is an important, character-building tool for children, where they can gain an understanding of the concept of rules and boundaries early on in life.
He is committed to ensuring all sports, big and small, are given every opportunity to grow their presence in the State, and he has a strong interest in using his experience in sport administration to assist grassroots sports clubs.
Mr Murray and wife Anna have four daughters, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr Murray is a keen recreational diver, fisherman and motor sports fanatic.
