Streamline WA Steering Committee meeting communiqué - December 2019

Outcomes of the eighth Streamline WA Steering Committee meeting.

Streamline WA continues to collaborate with mining industry, regulators and small business in 2020

During its eighth meeting on 19 December 2019, the Streamline WA Steering Committee focused on the progress of the Mining Environmental Approvals (MEA) and Regulatory Practice and Culture (RPC) projects.

On 9 December 2019, a collaborative workshop was held to inform and seek feedback from key stakeholders about the progress of the MEA project’s first four proposals. The MEA project team is on track to advance the proposals based on feedback received at this workshop.

Additional collaborative workshops are planned for early 2020 to work with stakeholders to co-design reforms to improve the mining environmental approvals process.

On 10 December 2019, State regulators came together for the second RPC working group meeting to explore ways to standardise regulatory practice and move towards a ‘fit for purpose’ regulatory culture in the Western Australian public sector.

The RPC project team outlined a number of initiatives to address current regulatory challenges, including the development of a whole of sector regulatory framework, a regulators’ toolkit and guidelines, and a regulatory officers’ capability framework.

The Steering Committee heard from David Eaton, the Small Business Development Corporation Commissioner, who has been nominated to advise the Australian Government on red tape reduction strategies relevant to Western Australia.

The Steering Committee and Mr Eaton discussed opportunities to make it easier for small business to operate and grow in Western Australia by progressing reforms that improve regulatory practice, rather than focusing on legislative change.

Ready for the coming year, Streamline WA encourages the small business community, and members of other business or community sectors, to share their ideas to improve regulation through the Streamline WA portal.
