Broome Regional Prison

Broome Regional Prison manages male and female prisoners across the Kimberley region.

Social visits have been suspended at all prisons, work farms and the Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Broome focuses on education and vocational training and offers employment for prisoners including supervised community work outside or within the prison, domestic duties and workshop maintenance. Prisoners can attend the local TAFE college for rural skills and construction training.

Visitors may be searched

Visitors may be searched when they enter prison grounds.

This includes the use of drug detection dogs which are used to detect prohibited items and substances. Searches include visitors' cars in the prison car park.

Handheld devices such as metal detectors will be used to ensure that visitors are not attempting to smuggle contraband inside the prison.

The Superintendent is authorised to examine any article in the visitor’s possession, including items of clothing. Where items of clothing are required to be removed for examination, prison officers of the same sex as the visitor will perform the search, or where the visitor is a child it will be a female officer.

No cameras, no drugs, no weapons, no alcohol

To make a booking call 9193 8500 Monday to Friday during the following hours:

9.00 am and 12.00 pm.

Bookings must be made 24 hours in advance.

A maximum of 3 adults and 3 children can visit at a time. Exceptions need prior approval from the Superintendent.

Children can't visit on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons.

Visitors are required to produce identification upon arrival at the prison and may have their person or vehicle searched.

Minimum security prisoners

Monday to Friday, weekends and public holidays, during the following hours:

3.00 pm and 5.00 pm

Medium and maximum security prisoners

Monday to Sunday during the following hours:

1.00 pm and 3.00 pm

Remand prisoners

Remand prisoners are entitled to daily visits.

Closed to visitors on Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Visitors should plan to arrive at the prison at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled visit time for security screening.

When you arrive at the prison, please ring the buzzer at the gate to enter the visitor's centre.

Any visit requests outside of normal visiting times may be approved by the Superintendent or OIC. Reasons for exceptions include families who have travelled long distances or have urgent or compassionate reasons.

Children are welcome to visit the prison. Children under the age of 18 years need to be supervised by an adult at all times.

To book a visit with children please tell the Visitor's Centre when you book the visit.

Child visit restrictions may apply to some prisoners.

Broome Prison is situated on Hamersley Street in the centre of Broome.

Parking is available to visitors

Visitors can catch the bus from Cable Beach. The closest stops to the prison are Mangoes Hotel and Carnarvon Street. Both stops are behind the prison. Refer to Transwa for more public transport options.

When you come for your visit you will have to make sure you've dressed appropriately.

No revealing clothing
No see-through clothing
No ripped or torn clothing
No gang colours or offensive logos
No tight-fitting clothing or lycra
No steel-capped boots
No hi-visibility clothing
No headwear
No smartwatches
No swimwear
No excessive jewellery

Visitors to prison must wear underwear and footwear.

Pants and skirts/dresses should be longer than mid-thigh.

Exemptions for legitimate cultural, religious or medical reasons or at the discretion of the Security Manager.

You will need to put your mobile phone, bags and personal items in a locker at your visit.

You can send money to a prisoner by cash or money transfer.

You can give cash to the cashier office during your visit. The cashier accepts cash only and does not carry change.
