Roebourne Regional Prison is a prison near Roebourne in north-western WA.

Social visits have been suspended at all prisons, work farms and the Banksia Hill Detention Centre.


Roebourne Regional Prison manages male and female prisoners from the Pilbara region of WA.

Prisoners at Roebourne are required to work or study. Trade and workshop skills are an important part of vocational training available. The education curriculum aims to provide prisoners with skills which will help them get a job when released.

Visitors may be searched

Visitors may be searched when they enter prison grounds.

This includes the use of drug detection dogs which are used to detect prohibited items and substances. Searches include visitors' cars in the prison car park.

Handheld devices such as metal detectors will be used to ensure that visitors are not attempting to smuggle contraband inside the prison.

The Superintendent is authorised to examine any article in the visitor’s possession, including items of clothing. Where items of clothing are required to be removed for examination, prison officers of the same sex as the visitor will perform the search, or where the visitor is a child it will be a female officer.

Bookings can be made by phone or in person.

To make a booking by phone, call 9182 0100 during the following hours:

  • 10.30 am and 11.30 am

To make a booking in person at the prison during the following hours:

  • 10.30 am and 11.30 am

Bookings must be made 24 hours prior to the proposed visit.

Visitors are required to produce identification upon arrival at the prison and may have their person or vehicle searched.

Remand prisoners

Monday to Friday:

  • 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm.

Saturday and Sunday morning: 

  • 9.30 am to 10.30 am
  • 1.15 pm to 2.15 pm

A maximum of 2 hour visits over the weekend. 

Sentenced prisoners

Saturday and Sunday:

  • 9.30 am to 10.30 am
  • 1.15 pm to 2.15 pm.

Maximum of four visitors per prisoner.

Children are welcome to visit Roebourne Regional Prison. 

To book a visit with children please tell the prison when you book the visit.

The visiting area contains a small play area for children. 

Parents / caregivers may bring into the prison a pacifier, baby bottle and a baby blanket and/or wrap. Prams and strollers are to be left secured in the Visitor's Centre during visits.

Roebourne Prison is approximately 5 km (15 minutes drive) from the township of Roebourne and is accessible by car along Sampson Road. Parking is available to visitors. 

What to wear to visit

When you come for your visit you will have to make sure you've dressed appropriately.

  • No revealing clothing
  • No see-through clothing
  • No ripped or torn clothing
  • No gang colours or offensive logos
  • No tight-fitting clothing or lycra
  • No steel-capped boots
  • No hi-visibility clothing
  • No headwear
  • No smartwatches
  • No swimwear
  • No excessive jewellery 

Visitors to prison must wear underwear and footwear. 

Pants and skirts/dresses should be longer than mid-thigh.

Exemptions for legitimate cultural, religious or medical reasons or at the discretion of the Security Manager.

You will need to put your mobile phone, bags and personal items in a locker at your visit.

You can send money to a prisoner by cash or money order.

To send cash, visit the gatehouse during your visit. Only cash is accepted.

Some Official Visitors are different from social visitors and may require the permission from the Minister for Corrective Services.
