Initial considerations when buying goods and services

Determining your budget upfront is important as it will dictate the journey which you need to follow in your procurement.

It is important to ensure that your agency's Accountable Authority is aware of the estimated cost of your planned procurement and that there is an approved budget sufficient to cover the required service cost for the life of the service agreement.

Engage the Department of Finance to discuss what procurement method you should use for purchases above $250,000.

Some agencies may be able to procure independently of the Department of Finance with purchases above $250,000. Provide the actual value and consult your agency procurement guidelines and your agency partial exemption or contact Finance, Government Procurement.

If buying under a Common Use Arrangement (CUA) or existing Agency Contract the estimated cost may influence the application of any Buying Rules.
